What Looked Like a Tornado Off Route 3 Was a "Scud Cloud"

by Deirdre Blake posted Jul 9 2014 11:06AM
Many of us saw what looked like a tornado off Route 3 near Fredericksburg's Central Park yesterday or have seen the pics on Facebook by now.
By definition, a tornado is a violently rotating column of air in contact with the ground that starts as a funnel cloud. What we saw was a "scud cloud." They are fragments of clouds that are unattached to and below a layer of higher clouds. They usually come on windgusts when rain-cooled air clashes with warmer air ahead of the thunderstorm.
