Yes, I really am a farmer’s daughter.  I grew up on a dairy farm in Paynesville, Minnesota.  I have had an opportunity to live and explore some great cities, thanks to radio.  jcash@wfls.com

What is your secret to picking the best?

Steve and I love watermelon but have a hard time picking a good one.    Some say make sure it's heavy, make sure it has some yellowing.  What's your secret?

It's all about the sun.
Look for the sun spot. Look for the white/yellow spot. The bigger the spot the longer it stayed on the vine in the sun getting ripe.

watermelons
It should be heavy for its size, good size yellow spot, and the green should be fairly dark. All these things are signs that the watermelon was allowed to ripen on the vine for a decent amount of time before being picked. Good luck!
