Foreign Ministers of Italy and Jordan Push for Worldwide Tolerance
UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The foreign ministers of Italy and Jordan are pushing an initiative to promote religious tolerance worldwide.

Italy's Giulio Terzi and Jordan's Nasser Judeh announcement Thursday came on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly and a little over two weeks after an anti-Islam video that portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a womanizer, a child molester and a fraud, sparked violent protests in Muslim countries.

Terzi said plans for the initiative were under way well before the video went public, and that the next step would be a conference in the coming months with representatives from governments, academia and international organizations.

Participants at a panel discussion on religious tolerance co-chaired by the two ministers on Thursday included U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay and UNESCO's director general, Irina Bokova.

U.S. to Ease Import Ban on Myanmar
NEW YORK (AP) - Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the U.S. is easing its import ban on Myanmar that had been a key plank of remaining American economic sanctions.

"In recognition of the continued progress toward reform and in response to requests from both the government and the opposition, the United States is taking the next step in normalizing our commercial relationship," Clinton said Wednesday during a meeting with President Thein Sein in New York.

"We will begin the progress of easing restrictions on imports of Burmese goods into the United States," Clinton said. "We hope this will provide more opportunities for your people to sell their goods into our market."

The announcement follows the Obama administration's resumption of normal diplomatic relations and the suspension of a U.S. investment ban.

U.S. Convict Linked to Deaths in British Columbia
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Canadian police have linked a dead U.S. convict to one of 18 women who vanished along three highways in British Columbia over several decades, and authorities are investigating the man for possible links to five murders in the U.S.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Insp. Gary Shinkaruk says Bobby Jack Fowler, who died in 2006, is a person of interest in 10 of the Canadian cases.

Shinkaruk says DNA has linked Fowler to the 1974 killing of teenage hitchhiker Colleen MacMillen.

The district attorney in Lincoln County, Oregon, said Monday that Fowler is a suspect in five unsolved murders of female teenagers there in the 1980s and 1990s.

Fowler was convicted in 1996 of kidnapping, assault, and the attempted rape of a woman he met at a bar in Oregon.

Cuban Dissident Declares a Hunger Strike
HAVANA (AP) - A prominent Cuban dissident has declared a hunger strike and says 12 other opposition members are joining her.

Martha Beatriz Roque is a state-trained economist and longtime Havana dissident, and she says that she and the others stopped eating Monday. The 67-year-old Roque suffers from diabetes and says she will drink water but not eat during the protest.

Among their demands is that Cuba's government free a little-known opposition member, Jorge Vazquez. They say he is serving a jail term for a minor, non-political crime and ought to have been freed Sunday.

The government has not commented. It dismisses the opposition as common criminals and paid stooges of Washington.

Roque was among 75 prominent intellectuals and social critics jailed in 2003. She was granted conditional release the following year.

Red Cross head had 'positive' talks with Assad

GENEVA (AP) - The new president of the Red Cross says he held "positive" talks with Syria's president this week to gain access to detainees and free up deliveries of badly needed aid.

Peter Maurer, president of the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross, says his talks with Bashar Assad were "sober, to the point" and  "clearly focused on humanitarian needs," such as freeing up deliveries of food, medicine and other supplies to hundreds of thousands of people.

Maurer told reporters Friday in Geneva that he also visited rural areas around Damascus where residents told him "horrific accounts of armed attacks" and left him shocked at the "extreme violence."

HK fears classes are pro-China brainwashing

HONG KONG (AP) - The Hong Kong government calls it national education. But parents, teachers and pupils in the former British colony call it "brainwashing."

They fear it's really a ploy by Beijing authorities to indoctrinate the city's young into unquestioning support of China's Communist Party.

Government plans to introduce the classes have triggered mass protests and hunger strikes in the semi-independent southern Chinese financial center.

The dispute deepened as classes started this week. Activists including a handful of hunger-strikers are camping out in front of Hong Kong government headquarters. They want to force officials to drop plans to introduce the subject in primary and secondary schools.

They've been joined each evening by thousands of protesters in black.

The growing opposition threatens to undermine the chances of pro-Beijing candidates in legislative elections Sunday.

India's Parliament adjourns after weeks of chaos

NEW DELHI (AP) - The latest session of India's often-raucous Parliament has been adjourned after weeks of shouting matches between the country's beleaguered government and the opposition.

The monthlong session ended Friday with only four out of 30 slated bills passed.

Over the last two weeks, both houses of Parliament have done little business as lawmakers of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party stalled proceedings demanding the prime minister's resignation after an audit report said the government lost huge sums of money by selling coal fields without competitive bidding.

The BJP refused the government's pleas to debate the subject. Its spokesman Arun Jaitley said his party wanted to shake the country's conscience.

On Friday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked the opposition to decide whether stalling Parliament was the way to "serve our functioning democracy."

Canadian's Filipino wife suspected in his murder

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Philippine police have filed a murder complaint against the Filipino wife of a Canadian man who was gunned down at a beach resort in a southern city last month.

Surigao City police investigator Rose Marie Almazan says prosecutors are expected to file a case next week against Jane Doyle and three Filipino men for the Aug. 12 fatal shooting of 62-year-old Harry Doyle of Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Almazan says Jane Doyle has fled to Canada but that Philippine police will seek her extradition after an arrest warrant is issued.

Almazan said Thursday that Jane Doyle had romantic relations with one of the other suspects, the family's driver-bodyguard, and that she was seen talking with the two other suspects, including the alleged gunman, a week before the killing.

Nationalism stokes island disputes around Asia

.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) - They are mere specks on the map. Many are uninhabited, and others sparsely so by seasonal residents. Yet the disputed ownership of these tiny constellations of islands is inflaming nationalist fervor from the cold North Pacific to the tropical South China Sea.

In recent weeks, these long-simmering tensions have returned to a boil, with violent protests in Chinese cities, a provocative island junket by South Korea's lame-duck president, and Japan's government reportedly planning to buy disputed islands from their private owners.

The popular analysis is that the rising tensions are fueled by a regional power shift that has seen China become increasingly assertive with its neighbors in securing claims over potentially resource-rich waters. But the growing acrimony may have at least as much to do with domestic political posturing.

Strong demand at $10 billion French debt auction

PARIS (AP) - France sold nearly (euro) 8 billion ($10 billion) in long-term debt at an auction that saw its borrowing costs for its 10-year bonds fall.

The yield, or interest rate, on the benchmark bond was 2.21 percent, down from 2.53 percent when it was last sold in July. There were no recent comparisons for the 5-year or 15-year bonds sold Thursday.

But demand was strong for all three. The sale reaped (euro) 7.98 billion, at the very top end of the Treasury's goal.

France's borrowing rates have been dropping in recent months. It even sold short-term bonds at negative interest rates earlier this year.

But economists say that because of its large debt and slow growth, France must quickly reduce its spending and jumpstart its economy, or face higher borrowing costs.

Massive Immigration Arrest in Greece
ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Greek police say they have made more than 3,000 arrests in a month-old campaign to hold and deport illegal immigrants.

A police statement says nearly 17,000 people were temporarily detained in the greater Athens area since the drive started on Aug. 4, with 2,144 of those arrested.

Debt-crippled Greece is the main gateway to the European Union for illegal immigrants, most coming from Asia and Africa. The influx has fueled racist rhetoric and violence.

Hundreds of thousands have entered Greece in recent years, and officials said Wednesday some 400 were illegally crossing the land border with Turkey every day before the clampdown.

The Turkish border influx has dropped 84 percent, the police statement said, with 1,121 illegal immigrants arrested there over the past month, compared to 6,991 a year earlier.

Official Site of Al-Jazeera TV Hacked
CAIRO (AP) - The official website of the Al-Jazeera TV satellite channel has been attacked by hackers backing the Syrian regime.

Hackers replaced the home page of Al-Jazeera's Arabic site with a statement that says the cyberattack was a protest against its coverage of the Syria civil war.

"This is in response to your position against Syria (people and government) and for special support of the militant terrorism," read a statement posted in Arabic Tuesday, underneath a red stamp reading "hack" in English. In the background was a scene from Al-Jazeera's English website.

The Qatar-based channel has extensively covered the 17-month-long Syrian conflict. Al-Jazeera has been an influential factor in covering "Arab Spring" uprisings across the region.

Qatar is a harsh critic of the Syrian regime and a leading backer of the rebels.

More Clashes Near Syrian Capital
CAIRO (AP) - Witnesses say Egyptian security forces have clashed with dozens of protesters in front of the Syrian Embassy in Cairo, chanting against the Syrian President Bashar Assad.

A security official says seven protesters were arrested and 16 people were injured, including soldiers, in the stone-throwing clash. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

Protesters chanted, "down with the Bashar (Assad) regime." They tried but failed to break through the security cordon surrounding the embassy building to hang a Free Syrian Army flag and take down the official one, witnesses said.

Clashes then spread to nearby U.S. Embassy.

During the 17-month-Syrian uprising, anti-Assad protests in Cairo have been relatively small. Egypt has hosted conferences of Syrian opposition groups.

A quarter of Liberia handed to loggers, report
MONROVIA,  Liberia (AP) - London-based watchdog group Global Witness and two others say one-quarter of Liberia's landmass has been handed to logging companies in shady deals, often using illegal  logging permits.

The report published Tuesday said international logging companies are relying on "Private Use Permits," which were designed for use by private landowners to allow them to cut trees on their own property. Instead they are being used by major companies and now cover 40 percent of the country's forests.

Companies holding them are not required to log sustainably, and pay little compensation to the government for the right to export the timber.

Over the weekend, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf suspended Forestry Authority head Moses Wogbeh. Presidential spokesman Jerolinmek Piah said Wogbeh is under investigation.

Hike in Cuban Customs Fees Catches Travelers Off Guard
HAVANA (AP) - A steep hike in customs duties in Cuba is catching some air travelers unaware and leaving others irate at the new fees.

Nelida Diaz is a Cuban-American who often travels back to the island to see family. She says she was shocked when officials charged her $588 at customs.

Diaz says "they had never charged us like that" before.

Travelers are allowed to bring in 66 pounds (30 kilograms) of miscellaneous goods without being charged. Everything after that gets taxed at $4.55 a pound ($10 per kilogram).

The new import taxes were announced two months ago. But many passengers at Havana's international airport Monday said they were taken by surprise.

Prominent Journalist Killed by Tanzanian Police
JOHANNESBURG (AP) - The Media Institute of Southern Africa says a prominent journalist has been killed in a confrontation with Tanzanian police who were clashing with rallying supporters of the country's biggest opposition party.

It quotes witnesses as saying that Daudi Mwangosi of Channel Ten TV demanded to know why police had arrested a fellow journalist. In the ensuing confrontation, Mwangosi was surrounded and being assaulted by police. Then, the institute says, a blast was heard and Mwangosi was seen lying on the ground before he died.

UN envoy to Syria says mission is very difficult
.

BEIRUT (AP) - The U.N.'s new envoy to Syria says his mission to end the country's civil war is "very, very difficult."

Lakhdar Brahimi's comments on Monday came as activists said Syrian warplanes bombed the northern town of Al-Bab, killing at least 15 people.

Brahimi told BBC TV that he is "scared of the weight of the responsibility" and that he is "standing in front of a brick wall."

"We'll have to see if we can go around that wall," he said.

Syria's violence has escalated in recent weeks. Activists said August was the bloodiest month since the uprising began in March 2011, with about 5,000 people killed.

Asked if his mission is "Mission Impossible," Brahimi said, "I suppose it is."

Gazan man dies after setting himself on fire

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - An unemployed young Gazan man has died after dousing himself with gasoline and setting himself on fire.

Sufian Abu Nada told a Palestinian radio station Monday that his 21-year-old son Ihab set himself alight after he urged the young man to find work.

Sobbing, Abu Nada said the family was struggling to get by on $220 a month.

There have been dozens of similar copycat deaths throughout the Middle East since a Tunisian man set himself on fire in December 2010, helping trigger the mass protests that have swept across the Arab world.

But Sunday night's incident was the first time in the Islamic militant Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Gaza has fallen into deep poverty resulting from international isolation and an Israeli-led blockade of the seaside strip.
