 Afghan Women Studying at UMW -- aired March 9, 2008 -- It's the first time the University of Mary Washington has had students from Afghanistan. The two women, Nibal Sadat and Sahra Noor are studying at UMW through the Initiative to Educate Afghan Women.

 Two years after the prize -- March 2, 2008 -- Local poet and University of Mary Washington English professor Claudia Emerson talks about how her life has changed since winning the Pulitzer prize for poetry two years ago.  Positive Alternatives to School Suspension -- aired February 24, 2008 -- When a middle or high school student is suspended from school in our area, there is an alternative to having the young person simply stay at home. PASS offers both academic assistance and behavioral counseling. This free program serves students in Spotsylvania, Stafford and King Geroge Counties plus the city of Fredericksburg. PASS students, parents and staff members take part in this interesting and informative conversation.

 Own Your Future -- aired February 17, 2008 -- Own Your Future is a statewide campaign to encourage residents to plan ahead for long-term health care. The project targets households with members between the ages of 45 to 70 years old. Tune in as state officials from the Department of Aging, Department of Medical Assistance Services and the Bureau of Insurance outline the key issues for Virginia residents.

 Bringing Occupational Opportunities to Schools -- aired February 10, 2008 -- High school seniors are designing the plans for a brick home which will be built in a Stafford County subdivision. Listen to students and teacher talk about the drafting program at Stafford High and how it helps them develop important career skills. The house they design will be built by other high school students who participate in the masonry, electrical and carpentry programs.

 Teen Parents -- aired February 3, 2008 -- Teenagers who become pregnant can get help through a parenting program sponsored by the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board in Spotsylvania. Our guests this week include a teenage mother, who talks of her experiences, as well as a variety of RACSB staff members.

 Big Brother/Big Sister -- aired January 27, 2008 -- Area children in need of an adult mentor can find that partnership through the Rappahannock Big Brothers, Big Sisters. This week on Focus we have several Big Brothers as well as staff members as guests to discuss the program and what it offers both the youth and adults. Learn more about this community organization and how it pairs adult volunteers with children in need.
