* It's KIDS. It's BASEBALL. And YOU can be apart of it all! The new AAU and USSSA Spotsylvania Hurricanes baseball team is looking for sponsors. The three team organization play in several tournaments and hope to travel to States and Nationals and maybe even Cooperstown, NY! The team travels around Fredericksburg and throughout the state. * Are Your Kids Vaccinated? It's not just for infants. Kids in their pre-teen years often become more likely to develop risk for disease. Before school starts, the CDC is reminding parents to get their children a pre-teen check up and necessary vaccines.
* Now Recruiting! Citizen's Justice Academy in Culpeper. Classes Spetember 10th- December 3rd from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. Open to ages 18 and older with 25 students per class. Register with Deputy Maria Rodriguez at (540) 727-3444 by Spetember 1st. Participants will get a behind-the-scenes education on law enforcement.

* IT'S RIVERFEST TIME! Riverfest is Friends of the Rappahannock's primary fundraiser for the organization's river advocacy, education, and restoration programs. We need tons of volunteers to make the event a success! If you are interested in becoming part of "Team Riverfest," and having a ball while making a difference for the River, contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@riverfriends.org.
* Help dress local students! School Dressing Days at the Bragg Hill Family Life Center (400 Bragg Hill Drive Fredericksburg,Va.) Bring or receive free gently used clothing for kids from preschool to high school. August 8th, 10th and 11th. Saturday hours 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday and Tuesday 9:00 a.m. to 2. All kids must be accompanied by an adult and must have a picture i.d. and/or a letter from social services or a minister. Call for more information at 540-898-2462.
* DVDs4Vets has been arranging for the donation of DVDs for soldiers returning from duty with Traumatic Brain Injuries or TBI as well as other serious battle wounds. With limited entertainment, vets in rehab can use what many of us take for granted every day. To donate new or used DVDs or to learn more about this worthy cause, please go to www.dvds4vets.org.
• The SPCA of Fredericksburg announces its Buy-A-Brick Program to benefit the new Humane Care Center. The 4 x 8 red bricks are $100 and 12 x 12 grey architectural pavers are $250. Payment plans are available. Each sized brick allows a message of your choice. The program runs through the end of the year or until bricks sell out. Bricks are numbered and placement begins at the front door and continues down the front of the sidewalk of the new Humane Care Center. • Welcome a high school student from Europe, Latin American, or Asia into your household. Host families are wanted for students arriving in the fall from over 40 countries. By becoming a volunteer host family, you offer your family a learning experience that cannot be duplicated by any textbook. These international students speak English; have their own spending money and medical insurance. Many are musically talented, athletic or have a variety of other interests. Countries, languages and cultures can come to life through this experience – it’s fun and rewarding for the entire family. • ElderFriends is a group of friendly visiting volunteers who are matched with and visit isolated elders in their own homes four times monthly. • Rappahannock United Way is looking for volunteer tax preparers to help low-income families file their taxes and apply for appropriate credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. By volunteering, you will help families claim tax refunds and credits they’re entitled to—money they can use to pay bills, reduce debt, build savings, or even obtain a car. Volunteers will serve at tax sites throughout tax season, late January to April 15. Hours of service are flexible. Volunteer today! • Spotsylvania Department of Social Services needs volunteers to provide clerical assistance to agency staff. Volunteers are also needed to deliver food packages to clients one Saturday a month, usually the last Saturday of the month. Approximately 6 families receive the packages and deliveries are within Spotsylvania County. (Call 540-507-7896 or email srj177@central.dss.state.va.us for more information.)
• The Stafford Amateur Radio Association (SARA) is composed of licensed radio operators (Men, Women & Children) who operate various radio equipment and communicate around the world. The main mission in the Stafford area is to provide back up emergency communication for the county in the event emergency communications become necessary. Additionally, they activate during sever weather, establish communications with the local weather stations and provide real time weather reports to safeguard life and property. The club members are from all walks of life and mostly have fun while helping others. They meet informally every Saturday morning at 07:00 at the Perkins Restaurant on highway seventeen in Stafford, VA.
• Seniors...whether you are an out-of-work professional, tradesperson or laborer, or a retiree unable to make ends meet on your retirement benefits, you can start earning a paycheck right away, while you reinforce or learn new skills that will enable you to eventually land a full-time job. Training opportunities span a wide range of professional, vocational, and office possibilities. • You can make a difference in a child’s life by sponsoring a foster child in the custody of Spotsylvania Department of Social Services. Sponsors provide the foster child with birthday and Christmas gifts and can provide for other basic needs throughout the year. The goal of this program is to meet the needs, dreams, and wishes of the children in foster care and to let the children know that their community supports them.
