Is Your Password On This List?
We’ve all heard it a million times: Keep your passwords a secret. But apparently, some Americans have taken that advice a little too literally. Case in point: the most hacked password in the U.S. for 2024 is . . . wait for it . . . “secret.” (Yes, we’re facepalming too.)
Every year, NordPass, a cybersecurity company, analyzes lists of leaked passwords to uncover the easiest and most common ones hackers crack. And this year’s findings are, well, a little embarrassing.
Here’s the lowdown:
The #1 most hacked password in America in 2024 is “secret.” It took hackers less than a second to crack, and it’s been used more than 328,000 times. Yikes.
Coming in at #2 is the classic “123456”—which also holds the dubious honor of being the #1 worst password worldwide.
Here’s the rest of the U.S.’s Top 10 worst offenders:
- password
- qwerty123
- qwerty1
- 123456789
- password1
- 12345678
- 12345
- abc123
Somewhere, a group of hackers is probably laughing all the way to the bank.
Other cringe-worthy passwords on the list include: iloveyou, baseball, princess, football, monkey, and sunshine.
If your go-to password is on this list, it’s time for a change. Pro tip: try using a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. And no, “password123!” doesn’t count as secure.
Stay safe out there—and off the hackers’ radar!
