November 19, 2024 8:18PM EST
Triple-A predicts a record-breaking 80 million Americans will travel this Thanksgiving, up from 78 million last year. That’s a lot of turkey-loving travelers hitting the highways and skies!
How We’re Traveling This Year
- 72 million will drive.
- 5.8 million will fly.
- 2.3 million will hop on buses, trains, or other modes of transport.
(One brave soul is traveling by canoe.)
Worst Travel Times to Leave
Traffic will be heaviest depending on your location, but generally, you’ll want to avoid:
- Tuesday, Nov. 26: 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM.
- Wednesday, Nov. 27: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
Heading Home? Beware These Busy Times
The post-Thanksgiving rush is no joke! Brace yourself for:
- Sunday, Dec. 1: Noon – 6:00 PM.
- Monday, Dec. 2: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. (Monday is particularly rough thanks to regular commuter traffic.)
The Best Day to Drive
If you want smooth sailing, plan to hit the road on Thanksgiving Day itself. Traffic is typically light, giving you one less thing to worry about before digging into the pumpkin pie.
Whether you’re driving, flying, or paddling your way to dinner, plan ahead and travel safe!
